How to take care of some flowers?

I have some flower. They are in my very sunny balcony. There is no other place that i can put them. Some of them had a kind of white cotton-looking stuff on them. Especially my begonias. And their leaves and flowers are getting fade. Also my hortensia (is that the right name for it - i don%26#039;t know) has that white stuff on it. How can i get rid of those?

I have an azalea, too. That one is going away, i can see that, the leaves are falling. I thing i gave it a lot water:/ Are there anything to be done?

Thank you guys...

How to take care of some flowers?
Does this look like powder on your plants? If so, you may have %26quot;powdery mildew%26quot;. It%26#039;s a fungus that is infectious and it sounds as though the conditions on your balcony are perfect for it. Here%26#039;s an article with more info and solutions:

http://www.angelfire.com/rings/ladypp/po...

You may also have gray mold. Here%26#039;s a terrific website with pics for identifying and treating your plants:

http://www.planetnatural.com/site/xdpy/k...

Both of these conditions are contagious. If you have any healthy plants on the balcony, move them immediately. It sometimes helps to remove diseased leaves, but be sure to wash your hands after pinching off affected areas. This stuff spreads really, really easily.

I hope this helps!

Can you reverse Root Rot on pepper plants?

My Bell pepper plants were fine one day, wilted and dying the next (after an evening watering) - I strongly suspect root rot. Can this be reversed? They are just beginning to produce right now and I want to save my Bell Peppers if possible! I was thinking about digging them up and replanting with azalea mix in pots which I have on hand as I think they do prefer a more acidic soil and that soil mix has better drainage qualities. Good idea, bad, any better ideas? Any advise is welcome! Thanks in advance.

Can you reverse Root Rot on pepper plants?
I think you%26#039;re on the right track.. better draining soil could be your best move.

pot them in larger pots and try to get the existing root mass out intact. Higher porosity soil may let the root mass dry better and the roots may re-generate. I don%26#039;t think you%26#039;ll %26#039;reverse%26#039; the root rot, but if there is better airspace in the container, your peppers could recover.

Good luck!

Theme question?/?

I asked this question earlier but I would like more input... my wedding is in less than 2 mths.My colors will be seafoam green and azalea(deep pink). My accent color will be silver... maybe.What%26#039;s the theme you can think of based on the colors? and also I could use help on an accent color cause I%26#039;m not too sure about the silver. Thanks so much for your input.

Theme question?/?
Perhaps you could nix the silver accent and use white! Since it will be a summery wedding, you could go with a %26quot;chic%26quot; theme!

Maybe find some vintage pieces to add in with your decorations...if you research the %26quot;shabby chic style%26quot; you can find thosands of images with those color combinations. This could steer you clear of the 80%26#039;s or even retro 50%26#039;s look of the pink and green together.

I would just pull the colors together as a fresh summer feeling! Martha Stewart and Rachel Ashwell have both used the chic look for quite awhile and it is absolutely breathtaking when you combine a light green with pink and white....delightful!

This would also widen your flower choices...you could add white in there for your accent and variations of pink flowers~your decorations could be very simple and yet elegant~maybe you could drop a bouquet of your centerpiece flowers in a vintage %26quot;chic%26quot; seafoam green vase. Add some vintage linens to your decorations? Lots of crystals to hang around the reception area? The possibilities with this theme would be endless!

Anyway, just another suggestion to consider!

Good Luck to ya, and congrats on the wedding!
Reply:the skys the limit or love brought us together. and i think you need to stick with thte colors they will be nice together
Reply:We didn%26#039;t really have a theme, but our invitations, programs, napkins, favor containers, etc. all had the same design - double hearts; which had nothing to do with our colors - pink and gold. I%26#039;m not sure you really need a theme. But a theme kind of depends on what time of day you%26#039;re having your wedding %26amp; reception, what part of the country you live in, how big is the wedding and is it formal or informal?
Reply:What do you need a theme for?

I like the silver, but if you don%26#039;t two colors is good enough.
Reply:sea foam green. and azalea makes me think immediately..

80%26#039;s , high bangs, circle knots on the longer tee shirts w/ spandex ... sorry that%26#039;s what comes to mind when you put those two together.
Reply:sounds like colors you might see in a Japanese garden. Maybe some deep colored cherry blossoms etc. You could do a Japanese Afternoon Tea or something to that effect. Something garden like will definitely work and silver is or white is your best choice for an accent color. Good luck!
Reply:i really do not understanfd ur question. if you are asking for colors they should be a ppink and a light blue
Reply:The first thing that comes to my mind with that color combination is a Tropical or Beach theme. Sea foam reminds me of the water and Azalea reminds me of the bright pink flowers of the Caribbean or Hawaii. I would nix the silver accent and go with white and a deep blue as accent colors.
Reply:I would go with a sea theme. Maybe seashells, and beach items on the tables and have like a beach wedding theme. I would suggest hitting ebay and do a beach theme wedding search. Hawaiian would work, too. It has more colorful colors, and everyone could have a lai.
Reply:It sounds pretty, I%26#039;d keep the silver accents, with those colors, you can do any theme that you like. Keep it simple, you don%26#039;t have a lot of time left. You don%26#039;t want to spend all of your time worrying about a theme. Have a happy and fun day!
Reply:Yeah i would say that the seafoam and pink aren%26#039;t a good combo. plus you don%26#039;t need an addition theme. most weddings just have colors as their themes.
Reply:http://www.sophieaz.com/gardenweddingthe...

Here is a webpage that you could browse that might help you decide. They have a variety of different themes that might trigger your creative mojo.

...also I was thinking renassaince, but i guess only if your pink was burgandy...hope this helps.

What do you think about this gift for my mom...?

Azalea Bonsai?? Does it smell good?

What do you think about this gift for my mom...?
Hi, I think that she would love it. Azaleas don%26#039;t normally smell though. But My, arn%26#039;t they pretty?Bye
Reply:not much smell. she must think that you are more than a kid. a plant is a responsibility. like a puppy . take care of it and love it.
Reply:Does your mother like to garden? If she loves plants, spends time taking care of them and has a green thumb, she will appreciate this type of gift. Bonsai plants do take maintenance, but can become treasured specimens that last a lifetime. My Azaleas are not fragrant, however.

Compost, granular fertilizer, miracle grow....all of them? Or just one of them? Very confused HELP!!?

We bought our house three years ago and the flowerbeds had been severely neglected, bone dry with horribly dry, hard NC red soil. We mixed in lots of horse manure the first year, planted a few things which died. Last year we pulled out a ton of dirt and put in topsoil and compost, planted and everything lived (yay!) but didn%26#039;t really grow much. Now, everything planted last year is coming up, covered in new growth, leaves, and some flower buds. I am so confused on how to feed them, there are so many options and I don%26#039;t want to overdo it. We mowed over all the leaves that fell off our trees in the fall and put them in the flower beds, then covered with a thick layer of mulch over everything. The leaves are breaking down into the soil, so that is considered food I guess? I have osmocote pellets I used last year, and wanted to get miracle grow and add compost on under the mulch...is that too much? Plants are hydrangea, lilac, rose, azalea, rhodies, going to plant camellia in there in week

Compost, granular fertilizer, miracle grow....all of them? Or just one of them? Very confused HELP!!?
Slow down. Too much too soon.

1). leaves need to be well rotted to be benefical to the flower beds. Leaf molds. They take about 3 years to rot in the compost pile before adding to the beds. -rotting leafs stink. Plus the pull the nutrients out of the beds- allow them to rot.

2). Osmocote is good to start new plantings with.

3). Amend the soil with 1 part sand, 1part peat/topsoil-humas/loam and 1 part your garden soil. Then plant.

4) Add bonemeal to flower/rose beds. Check your PH.

5) Add compost (well rotted - store bought or on 3rd year post) to established beds in the spring to add nutrients lost over the winter and when you removed you winter mulch.

6). Miracle grow works best when used on existing beds.

hope this helps.

7) Try Posie Power - you can order from the internet.
Reply:TwinC is right. Too much too soon and too high an expectation.

Go to your local Nursery and purchase a Granular 10-10-10 with minerals fertilizer. Apply it now, again in mid-June, and in Mid-Sept. A little goes a long way so one bag will last you the season for a garden setting. It also does wonders for turfgrass when applied in late fall. It is also cheap!

Stop using leaves from trees in your garden! You are looking to spread diseases and pests from such trees into your bed. A good shredded hardwood mulch is much better and decomposes much quicker. Take a soil sample to your nursery for Ph examination. Most of your plants want acidic soil and they can recommend the right additive given the Ph of the sample. Good Luck
Reply:three things will help you

Lime powder type

compost and mericalgrow fertilizer,

Lime will sweeten the soil, compost will keep the roots cool and hold the moister the plants need and add to the soil in time, fertilizer will feed them but only feed them well once a week once the plants start to bloom stop the fertizer and only fertilize once a month unless you have drowt then do it more often good luck your plants need the graybox acid type mericalgrow, they all like acitic soils.

Name of shrub? Large flowers, dark green leaves?

My grandmother had one a long time ago. It was quite large, not an azalea. It had large white flowers and green leaves. I think the flowers had no scent, but that could be wrong...it was so long ago. I do remember very large blossoms though.

Name of shrub? Large flowers, dark green leaves?
Are the leaves very thick and dark green with a kind of furry underside? It could be a magnolia (see picture of flower: http://www.backyardnature.net/fl_magno.h... Although magnolia%26#039;s have a scent it isn%26#039;t very strong. They%26#039;re really a tree but I%26#039;ve seen them kept small, especially if they%26#039;re not in full sun.

It also could be a camelia-here%26#039;s a pic of one that%26#039;s pink but I%26#039;ve seen them get really close to white. The picture is 1/4 of the way down the page. http://members.lycos.co.uk/devonbelle194...
Reply:It would also help us, if we knew what USDA hardiness zone you/ grandma were in. That could change/ narrow the scope.

Peony is a good shot, so is Rhododendron. Do you remember the color of the flower? How about its approximate size? Baseball? Softball?

There are alot of larger %26quot;flowered%26quot; shrubs in the Viburnum group. Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) has large flowers (most have a fragrance... though).

I hope that this potpourri of answers helps you narrow your search.
Reply:It was probably a Rhododendron. The blooms are very large. They are white, light or dark pink, or lilac. The white is the most popular version.
Reply:hibiscus maybe
Reply:its hard to tell without a pic, but lots of the old timers had rose of sharon shrubs. white was the most popular but later collected the other lite colors of flowers. would help if i knew where your grandma lived. even then, there are so many possibilities.
Reply:Hydrangea, snowball bush. My grandma had one of them as well. Very pretty.
Reply:ok. not hydrangea, how about peony? were the flowers realy big or could it be that you remember them being really big because you were small?
Reply:Sounds like a Peony. I used to have one years ago and they are a beautiful flower. The other thing I remember is the ants used to always be on the flower buds, chewing on them to help them open.
Reply:There are so many things it could be; without any more detail, it%26#039;s really hard to say. What part of the country was it in? Was it an evergreen, or did it drop its leaves in winter? What shape were the leaves? What time of year did it flower?

I doubt it%26#039;s a peony--they are long-lived perennials, not shrubs, and are usually 3-feet or smaller. My first thought, if you%26#039;re sure it%26#039;s not an azalea, hydrangea, or rose of sharon, is that it might be a camellia. They grow in the warmer regions of the country, are evergreen, and have large flowers in the fall, winter, or spring (some varieties are white-flowered, although they also come in other colors).

Another possibility is a magnolia, which can sometimes grow in a shrubby form. But there are many, many other possibilities. You might try checking mail-order gardening companies%26#039; websites for shrubs and see if you can find pictures to match your memory of the shrub. Wayside Gardens is one that has good pictures and descriptions.

Im goin to myrtel beach for spring break to golf these r the courses im playing anyone kn if they%26#039;re any good?
You%26#039;ve got two B courses and three C courses. It won%26#039;t make any difference though, you%26#039;re on a golf course.
Reply:I have played Azalea Sands and it is an older track but I enjoyed it. If I remember correctly it has a few holes w/ water in play but I also remember a very easy 130 yd - 150 yd par 3 on the front nine. It is located on the main drag and you will have to be paying attention to see the sign.
Reply:Indigo Creek is the only one on this list that is any good, IMHO. This course has been renovated, and receives rave reviews. The remaining courses on the list are at the low end of the Myrtle Beach Qualtiy scale. However, with excellent late winter-early spring weather, any golf course in Myrtle Beach can %26quot;look good.%26quot; If you are a low handicap golfer, none of these courses will provide a tough challenge, with the possible exception of River Oaks.

Anyone have experience as a camp counselor, specifically girl Scouts?

I was thinking of being a counselor for Azalea Trails Girl Scout Camp over the summer. I attended it as a girl scout when I was 12-14 (im 23 now). Has anyone else done this? Was it fun? Did it suck?

I need info on the Triangular chair.....?

How to sit in it ....etc....My daughter needs this information for an interview she is scheduled for. She may become an ambassador of our city......Mobile Alabama. The Azalea Trail Maid candidates must sit correctly in this chair to pass the interview. Later she will wear an antebellum dress and greet dignitaries and tourists to our city. This is very important. Thanks

I wanted to know if its worth getting landscaping fabric for my garden...?

This is the first time I%26#039;m gardening and I%26#039;m learning as I go. I just planted shrubs (Barberry and Azalea mostly so far) and I would really like to get it done properly once so I dont have to repair any mistakes after. I hate weeds by the way!

I wanted to know if its worth getting landscaping fabric for my garden...?
It depends what you%26#039;re trying to accomplish. I find landscaping fabric is a problem in the wetter climates, (like me in Michigan). I use natural mulch like wood chips. Fabric is kind of a pain to deal with later on when you have to get back in the flower bed and fertilize and stuff. And if it%26#039;s too wet, you%26#039;ll get pill bugs and those other icky bugs whose name escapes me at the moment. Plus, to me it seems kinda %26quot;fake%26quot;.

If you%26#039;re a newbie, keep it simple, stick with hardy stuff like Hostas and a light cover of mulch. That%26#039;s real easy to maintain. Also, buy perennials and plant them in their fav locations based on their sun needs. They come back each year so you don%26#039;t have to go out and buy new stuff.
Reply:cardboard works too. Report It

Reply:Landscaping fabric, in my hands, has been very disappointing...grass comes up through it, seems to be a waste of money. Mulch and weed when necessary. Good luck
Reply:I have to agree with the other responses. I have found landscaping fabric to be a pain in the b---. Weeds come up anyway. Newspaper works much better to keep weeds down and they break down and work to enrich the soil. So that you don%26#039;t see it I put mulch on top of the paper.

Good Luck!

Electra on Azalea Path?

I am supposed to interpret Silvia Plath%26#039;s %26quot;Electra on Azalea Path.%26quot; for my summer english class. I have never really been good at poetry. Does anyone have any insight to this interpretation?

Electra on Azalea Path?
It%26#039;s about Plath%26#039;s visit to her father%26#039;s grave. Her father, Otto Plath, died when Sylvia was eight. He was a diabetic but refused to acknowledge this (he thought he had cancer) and developed gangrene in his leg, and died.

On March 20, 1959, Plath visited her father%26#039;s grave. She kind of had a love-hate relationship with him: admired him greatly, but hated him for %26quot;leaving%26quot; her.

The first two stanzas are about her denying that he really died. She never actually saw his body, so in her childish mind he was stilll alive somewhere, or had returned to Heaven like the God he was in her mind. Seeing as he died when she was eight, the time frame fits (hibernating for twenty years). In this perfect world he did not die at all, or perhaps did not exist in the first place (%26quot;God-fathered into the world from my mother%26#039;s belly%26quot;). The third stanza describes the graveyard (the %26quot;charity ward, poorhouse%26quot; is also described in her Journals). In the fourth stanza, the lines in italics (%26quot;The day your slack sail...at your last homecoming.%26quot;) are about the Greek tragedy about Agamemnon, a hero from the Trojan War. He sacrificed his own daughter, Iphegenia, Electra%26#039;s sister, to be able to sail to Troy. Clytaimnestra, Iphegenia and Electra%26#039;s mother, and Agamemnon%26#039;s wife, killed him when he returned home from Troy. Plath herself has perhaps an Electra complex (she loved her father too much and hated her mother). In the last stanza there is of course the gangrene that killed Otto Plath. The suicide is Otto Plath%26#039;s death, which can be seen as a suicide as he refused to acknowledge that he had diabetes, a very treatable disease. %26quot;It was my love that did us both to death%26quot; is perhaps a childish notion that children have: they can control the world around them, even kill people. Therefore the young Sylvia Plath might have felt that she killed her father.

Hope this helps.
Reply:No, not really. Just try to write what it means to you and what you think it means to others and the author.

Flowering bush for zone 6?

what flowering bush would you suggest that

looks good all year round to plant in front of my house.

I live in zone 6 new england area.

I do not want azalea or hydrangea or hyacinth I%26#039;m

hoping for something different out of these three

because I have them around my house already.

I heard burning bush is great even though it doesn%26#039;t

flower it still looks good all year round.

Any suggestions would be so appreciated

thanks!

Flowering bush for zone 6?
Burning bush needs pruned constantly to keep from getting HUGE. Even the dwarf is big.

Try one of the new National Arboretum crape myrtles for northern gardens. I have had Hopi for several years now, in Ohio.

Hopi is also a perfect match to the knockout rose %26quot;Blush%26quot;.
Reply:I love goldflame spireas! The plants in the spring are a lime-ish green and knew growth is yellowish and they flower A LOT of purple flower, they are in clusters. During the summer this new growth turnes a nice red-rusty color and sometimes purple. then in the fall they are a beautiful gold yellow. I LOVE them!
Reply:Burning Bush is a very good choice and as stated it doesn%26#039;t bloom all the time. What about a magnolia bush not the tree.

Carpet roses will bloom all summer, and the reblooming lilac will flower from spring until frost.
Reply:Look through this site, the zones are listed and pics provided. Then go to a local nursery. And once again, it is now illegal to sell burning bush in NE.
Reply:How about lilacs or forsythia?

Summer Rose Garden colors...help please.?

We are having our wedding on July 5th, of this year at a rose garden in Columbus Ohio. The roses at the garden are red, pink, yellow, white....all colors pretty much. But, I love the colors green and yellow....do those go well with that setting do you think? How about bright pink like Azalea color and green? Maybe some yellow in there? What color scheme would you do? Would blue looks funny? I need suggestions, as I can%26#039;t seem to make up my mind!

Summer Rose Garden colors...help please.?
Well, it seems like you have a lot to work with, so you can do a lot. If you love the colors yellow and green then that is what you should go with. I think that they match the setting just fine. If you want to you can add in a little pink-it will make it a lot more colorful..

You could just choose two colors like green and yellow or pink and green--then have multi-colored roses as bouquets and centerpieces, it will match with the garden beautifully...the rest of the decor, dresses, etc. can be the two color...
Reply:What everyone is telling me is to go with what you want! If you want greens and yellows, go and speak to a florist and pick out what you want. I%26#039;m not a blue flower fan, but there are a ton of ideas online and in books at the library. I just picked up a book of wedding bouquets. If you type in wedding bouquets into yahoo, there are a ton of pics to go through or brides.com does particular colors. I am getting married in a garden too, but in the fall. I%26#039;m using reds, oranges, yellows as my bouquet colors. Remember, you also have the reception to think about and what colors will look good at it!
Reply:Well it%26#039;s understandable that you can%26#039;t make up your mind...you pretty much can go with anything here and it%26#039;ll look good. It seems that you%26#039;re leaning with a shade of pink. There are a lot of dresses out there that can be fairly neutral in color and then adding a sash brings in the color of your wedding. I personally love the chocolate brown and pink combination. What about a fusha dress with a chocolate sash or vise versa?

Remember to keep it simple. Adding too many colors will definitely throw off the look you are trying to accomplish. Pick a bold color with a neutral color and you%26#039;re sure to have a winning combination.

Good luck!
Reply:i would do a bouquet of a crayon box of roses. all different colors, i would steer clear of red if it%26#039;s the most bold color- unless you really want it to pop like that

but a bouqet of the blue you want and pinks, yellows, whites, creams, apricots etc...

with soft green greenery and ribbons would be beautiful

the dresses can even be different colors as well.

oh that will look so pretty

Am gonna plant Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam'.It's been recommended 2 add sulfer soil to the planting hole?

To save myself a trip and another random product I may just use my Azalea feed which has sulpher in it...scatter it on the top.Would u give it a shot and risk it or just go buy the flippin sulpher soil I%26#039;m never gonna use again?

Am gonna plant Coreopsis verticillata %26#039;Moonbeam%26#039;.It%26#039;s been recommended 2 add sulfer soil to the planting hole?
Coreopsis verticillata is adaptable to a wide range of pH (6.1 to 7.8). You should not need sulfur unless a soil test has shown that you are outside the preferred range of this plant. Also, Moonbeam is tolerant of poor soils. Use of fertilizers on coreposis can result in leggy, spindly plants. One additional point of note, %26#039;Moonbeam%26#039; is short lived (2-3 yrs.) in the garden. Its seeds are sterile and this plant will fade from your garden. I love the color of %26#039;Moonbeam%26#039;, but you will fine that %26#039;Zagreb%26#039; is a much longer lived cultivar of Coreopsis verticillata in the urban garden.
Reply:Coreopsis doesn%26#039;t need anything special to do well. I have it in my garden beds and I don%26#039;t do anything special to it at all. Coreopsis is basically a wild flower that will grow in just about any soil.

What perennial plants look best under a magnolia?

I live in zone 5 in the midwest and have a small sweetgum magnolia that needs plantings around the base. I would like to use an azalea and some iris for spring bloom, but I%26#039;m at a loss for what other plants would compliment the shape and size of the magnolia leaves for summer color.

What perennial plants look best under a magnolia?
Verbena is probably the best one. it can give you a smooth carpet type look. You can mix different colours of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbena
Reply:I live in the east but as for me, I love Lillie%26#039;s under magnolia trees, or inpatients look good there also. Mimi PS I am not familiar w/the climate in the west though.
Reply:If it is shady, plant some impatience. They come in a wide variety of colors. Azaleas are nice but the flowers are short lived in the spring. Azaleas can also get to be a very large bush for under a small tree. The iris should be fine. I would plant some mums for fall flowers and pinch them back until late July. They too, come in a variety of colors and are perennials as are the iris.
Reply:do not plant vebena.. it won%26#039;t servive the winters in our zone....... use hostas!

Pancreatitis in Dogs (my puppy's count is 798?!)?

My 10 month old Jack Russell Terrier is very sick. Her initial symptoms were vomiting and bloody diarrhea, she tested negative for parvo at emergency vet%26#039;s (Monday), they gave her antibiotics and anti nausea injections. Took her to regular vet (Tuesday AM), she was put on bland diet (rice, potatoes, etc) and continued vomiting. Yesterday (Wednesday AM) she was extremely dehydrated so we took her back to vet, put her on IV and did bloodwork.

Her Pancreatic enzymes(?) were 798 and her WBC is very very low.

I know she ate a lot of Easter scraps, but I don%26#039;t think that explains why she is so sick! Could she have been poisoned or injested something that could have done this to her?

We just planted an Encore Azalea and begonias, but I don%26#039;t think she ate any of it, but I really can%26#039;t say for certain.

The vet can%26#039;t explain her low white blood cell count, or why her pancreas count is so high! Can you help??

Pancreatitis in Dogs (my puppy%26#039;s count is 798?!)?
Does the dog drink a lot or urinate a lot? Did the vet check for diabetes? My dog%26#039;s count was over 1000 she was diagnosed a diabetic 3 yrs ago is on insulin and is well controlled. I%26#039;d have the vet do a glucose curve.
