What perennial plants look best under a magnolia?

I live in zone 5 in the midwest and have a small sweetgum magnolia that needs plantings around the base. I would like to use an azalea and some iris for spring bloom, but I%26#039;m at a loss for what other plants would compliment the shape and size of the magnolia leaves for summer color.

Verbena is probably the best one. it can give you a smooth carpet type look. You can mix different colours of it.

Reply:I live in the east but as for me, I love Lillie%26#039;s under magnolia trees, or inpatients look good there also. Mimi PS I am not familiar w/the climate in the west though.
Reply:If it is shady, plant some impatience. They come in a wide variety of colors. Azaleas are nice but the flowers are short lived in the spring. Azaleas can also get to be a very large bush for under a small tree. The iris should be fine. I would plant some mums for fall flowers and pinch them back until late July. They too, come in a variety of colors and are perennials as are the iris.
Reply:do not plant vebena.. it won%26#039;t servive the winters in our zone....... use hostas!
